NFCC 44th Annual Leaders Conference Takes Shape

Exciting details are wrapping up for the 44th NFCC Annual Leaders Conference (ALC) which will take place from September 14 -16, 2009 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC. Much of this year's ALC program will align with the strategic priorities identified at the Leadership Summit this past spring. This includes: driving legislative and regulatory change, pursuing funding opportunities that support core services of Member Agencies, and building national partnerships and reinforcing existing relationships with key organizations. Many new speakers, panels, and workshops have been added in recent weeks.  Please consult the schedule at the end of this newsletter for more information.

Plans to offer two NeighborWorks America training sessions for housing counselors during this year's conference are complete! All candidates should have received notification regarding their confirmed class session on July 25 from Mary Ann Reott. There are two sessions of Advanced Foreclosure Training (HO 307) and one session of Advanced HECM Training (HO 335). More details are found in this issue and counselors will be provided more information in the coming days about this opportunity.

The annual golf outing is set for Sunday, September 13, and a special private tour of the historic US Treasury Building and Capitol Hill visits are scheduled for Thursday, September 17.

Full online registration is now available! All inquiries regarding the Annual Leaders Conference may be directed to Mary Ann Reott at mreott@nfcc.org or (301) 576-2513.

We look forward to seeing you in a few weeks!

Lisa Madigan, Attorney General, State of Illinois

MadiganJoin us as we honor Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan with the NFCC’s Making the Difference Award for her outstanding contributions on behalf of the citizens of Illinois and countless American consumers alike. During her career as a public servant, Lisa Madigan shares the NFCC's vision to create a national culture of financial responsibility and has made consumer protection and financial literacy a top priority. This award presentation is scheduled for September 16.

About Lisa Madigan
Often recognized for her leadership and integrity, Lisa Madigan has brought a high level of activism to the Office of Illinois Attorney General. From her first days in office, she has demonstrated principled leadership, putting policy before politics and focusing her work as the state’s top legal advocate on protecting the people and communities of Illinois.

A thoughtful and determined advocate, Madigan has dedicated the energy and resources of her office to protecting women and children from the dangers of sexual predators on our streets and on the Internet. Under Madigan’s stewardship, the Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General’s office has established a national reputation for aggressively safeguarding consumers from fraud and unsafe products. Madigan is a leader in the public’s fight for open and accessible government, and she also has been credited with restoring integrity to Illinois’ gambling industry. Additionally, Madigan has been widely praised for implementing a series of proactive law enforcement strategies to combat the spread of methamphetamine throughout the state.

As part of her work to make Illinois’ communities safer, Madigan is the first Illinois Attorney General in over 25 years to personally argue a case before the United States Supreme Court. In 2004, she successfully argued Illinois v. Caballes, in which the Court upheld the ability of police officers to use specially trained dogs to detect the presence of illegal drugs during traffic stops, ensuring that law enforcement may continue to use this effective strategy to fight the spread of drugs into our neighborhoods.

Attorney General Madigan has become a respected advocate in the national legal arena. Testifying before a Congressional committee on the recall of dangerous toys, she advocated for stronger consumer product safety laws and called on the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission to improve its efforts to protect the public. She also testified before Congress to urge the passage of measures to protect consumers’ privacy by prohibiting the sale of cell phone records. Under her leadership, the Attorney General’s office has successfully litigated three cases in the United States Supreme Court. Madigan’s office also has taken the lead in presenting the views of the states in numerous amicus briefs filed in the Supreme Court, including a brief, joined by 46 other states, seeking to protect the role of state courts in enforcing critical consumer protection laws.

Tim Gard, CSP, CPAE, nationally recognized authority on stress reduction through humor

Tim GardDon't miss Tim Gard's high energy, extremely funny "Developing a Comic Vision" keynote address. He will guide attendees in developing their own 'Comic Vision' to enable them to gain a refreshed perspective while working through negative situational stress factors in the workplace. Both personally and professionally this session will energize you on how to keep all in perspective.

About Tim Gard
During the last decade, Tim has delivered his entertaining, informative presentations nationally and internationally, speaking to government groups, professional associations, and corporations of every kind. Through his work he expands the understanding of humor skills as stress reduction tools. His development of easy-to-implement techniques has inspired action from publishers, television, and radio talk shows around the world. His methods and techniques are an effective way to deal with, diffuse, and even avoid intensely stressful encounters that can—and often do—occur every day.

After majoring in communications at Flathead Valley Community College and Montana State University in Bozeman, Tim began his career working with the Montana Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services. During this experience, he discovered that his ability (and unstoppable tendency) to sprinkle non-malicious mischief over office politics in a tense environment was an appreciated antidote to daily pressures. When asked by superiors to develop a training program to assist eligible workers in managing stress, burnout and the ever-looming threat of compassion fatigue, he knew that sharing his own good humor was the most powerful and productive way to contribute.

After locating to Denver, Colorado in 1994 to join the staff of USDA's Food and Nutrition Service, the enormous calling from his peers and superiors for consulting and training inspired Tim to resign from the federal government, and devote a full-time effort to his seminars and workshops.

Now, more than a decade later, Tim's down-to-earth style and easy manner gains him immediate rapport as he imparts his stress-reducing, success-generating perspective in a highly humorous format. Whether he is helping a group develop a Comic Vision®, or building strong teams through humor, participants enjoy his fun, informative, and fast-paced session that keeps them on the edge of their seats! A navy veteran who served tours in San Francisco and aboard the US aircraft carrier Midway in Japan, Tim values the sacrifices, contributions and pressures endured by people who want to make the world a better place for us all, one laugh at a time.

DC’s museums and galleries put on some of their most compelling exhibitions and performances in the fall. Each September, The Kennedy Center kicks off the city’s cultural calendar with its annual Prelude Festival, a month-long preview of the new season. Students in the city’s prestigious universities return to the classroom, joined by visiting interns from other colleges throughout the world. Fall visitors can also take part in popular annual events like the fall edition of WalkingTown DC, a weekend of free walking tours, and neighborhood festivals such as Adams Morgan Day and Taste of Georgetown. On Veterans Day, DC’s world-famous monuments and memorials hold wreath-laying ceremonies to honor the men and women who’ve served in conflicts, attracting thousands of veterans and their families. Special Training provided by The Center for Lobbying in the Public Interest

CLPI logoThe NFCC is pleased to partner with the Center for Lobbying in the Public Interest (CLPI) to provide conference attendees an engaging, hands-on session to promote effective lobbying practices. Why advocate? Effective advocacy builds the capacity, effectiveness, and impact of an organization and it enables nonprofits to achieve their missions with systemic, lasting reforms. It enables organizations to achieve the greatest good for the greatest number of the people and communities that they serve. Lobbying by 501(c)(3) nonprofits is a powerful strategy for making people's lives better and for building stronger communities. Sometimes when people hear the word lobbying, they say, "It's illegal for nonprofits to do" or "Lobbying is for organizations that have lots of money" or "Lobbying is for experts who are paid to know the process and have access." These statements are among the many myths about lobbying." (provided courtesy of the CLPI at www.clpi.org)

Learn more in this engaging, informative session as we prepare for our Hill Visits and view recent comments from CLPI President, Larry Ottinger, on why lobbying is paramount especially in today's environment.
